February is African American History Month and I am looking to plan to trips for our class. The first trip is to go to real-life re-enactment of the Underground Railroad. This will enlighten students knowledge of slavery and what African Americans had to go through to gain their freedom. The next trip is possibly to see the movie "Red Tails" which tell the life of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first group of all African American pilots and war heroes. Some of them are still living today.
We are working on fractions in math class. Many students are struggling with the concept of adding fractions with unlike denominators. We are working on this concepts indepth in class. We are using models and writing multiples of each number to help them understand how to find common denominators. Please allow your children to get on Study Island or BrainPop for further practice with adding fractions with unlike denominators. I am doing my best to help them understand and so are their classmates, we are working in small groups. So lets all work together to help our student learn and understand the concept adding fractions with unlike denominators. We will probably be working on adding fractions with unlike denominators for about two weeks.
In science we are learning about Heredity and Genetics. Students may come home with questions they need you to answer so they can finish assignments or complete their homework. So please help your child by answering any questions they may have so that it can guide our classroom discussion of Heredity and Genetics. You can also ask your child questions about what they learned in class and they should be able to answer your question in great detail.
In Social Studies we are discussing European Exploration. We have been discussing this topic for about a month now and this week we are focusing on Colonial Life in America. The students ssem to be very interested in this time period and the people who lived and explored during this period.
Valentines's Day
We will be having a Valentine's Day Party on Tuesday February 14, 2012 in our classroom at 2:15pm. Students are asked to bring in treats (cookies, cupcakes, food, candy, cups, pop, plates, etc.) for the class to make the party a success. They can also bring in Valentine's Day cards to pass out to their classmates. We have 28 students in our class. So please send enough treats for the entire class.
