As a parent you have the right to know the professional qualifications of your child’s instructors.　 The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 gives you the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

Whether the teacher has met the criteria for teaching in the grades and subjects in which he or she teaches.

Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency permit or other provisional status by which state licensing criteria have been waived.

The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.

Whether any instructional aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

You also will receive timely notice if your child, for whatever reason, is being taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified. A highly qualified teacher is defined by state law as a teacher who is certified/licensed and teaching in the grade level or subject area of certification/licensure.
